A FEW WORDS
I’m Dr. Kimberly Harrison, Program Director, Physical Therapist, and Godan (5th degree Black Belt) here at American Sport Karate Centers.
As a martial arts instructor with extensive experience training kids, and helping those with special needs excel with their peers, there is nothing better than seeing them grow firsthand.
But more important than the martial arts skills they learn… is the personal skills they develop and carry for life.
Because martial arts is so much more than just kicking and punching, and getting the next colorful belt.
It’s about developing confidence, discipline, character, focus and respect.
With every class we teach, your kids are growing in mind, body and character.
That’s because martial arts provides instant positive feedback. Through learning to focus on the core moves, they develop discipline and respect. They can instantly see and feel a difference, making them destined to build confidence, self-awareness and self-respect.
And of course it’s a ton of FUN!
Our Special Needs program places an emphasis on appropriate integration into classes with peers while meeting each and every student at their level to help them reach their full potential.
That’s why I love teaching martial arts to kids in this community, and why I know your kids are going to LOVE training at American Sport Karate Centers.
We promote full integration with peers.
KIDS DON’T GET LABELED IN MARTIAL ARTS
One of the most damaging things that can happen to kids in school is that they get labeled: the fat kid, the clumsy kid, and so on. In our school, they’re all just martial arts kids!
With our fully integrated program you child does not get pulled from the classroom during certain activities, or singled out for something that they can’t do. Every child is here to learn at their pace and achieve success.
Kids learn to trust themselves and their abilities. As a result, their confidence soars.
Physical self-confidence leads to intellectual and emotional self-esteem, and martial arts can help kids carry themselves with a deep-seated sense of confidence and authority.
BULLYING HURTS KIDS PSYCHOLOGICALLY
Children who are bullied often suffer from low self-esteem, fear, and poor school performance. Their lives revolve around the actions of bullies.
Unfortunately for children with special needs they often get singled out as a target for bullies.
Bullies focus on kids who seem fearful or vulnerable, but martial arts teaches kids to be confident and self-assured.
Martial arts build mental, emotional, and physical strength – and by teaching self-respect, it helps children believe in themselves, which makes them poor targets for bullies.
The family atmosphere within our school will also help provide your child with a positive peer group that will be there for your child when you can’t. The power of peers is amazing!
Every Child is Special
As a parent of a child with special needs you are frequently being told that a particular activity is not appropriate for your child, or that their needs are more than what can be handled in an integrated setting.
Not every child can be integrated in to classes with their peers immediately, however our goal for every child is to reach a point of integration. We have a variety of programs that can meet children at their level to help them grow and achieve their personal bests.
Give your child the gift of a peer group that includes them, looks out for them, and provides positive interaction on a daily basis. You will always look out for your child and try to set them up for success but giving them the tools and resources to do this for themselves is the greatest gift of all.
Still not sure if one of our programs is right for your child, just give us a call and we can go over any concerns and answer all your questions.
We have been going to American Sport Karate Center for over 4 years and would recommend it to anyone. They are so patient with the kids and teach great skills like stranger danger, self defense and best of all discipline. Definitely recommend!!
My daughter has been going to ASKC for over 6 years. I really didn't think that karate was going to be her "thing" when she first began, but she loves it and has grown in so many ways thanks to Mr. Clifton, Miss Kim, and all the instructors and students. She earned her 1st degree black belt last fall and we really feel that ASKC is part of our family.
When we started at ASKC my son was scared. We had tried another karate school where he was thrown into a class with older kids and minimal instruction. He was embarrassed that he didn’t know the moves. ASKC is different. First of all, they started with a get to know you session where they taught him some basic moves and let him know what to expect in class (he’s a kid that needs lots of information). After talking with him, they decided to let him go to classes with younger kids to build his confidence. When he was ready, they moved him to the youth class. Every student at ASKC is treated as an individual and they are experts at teaching and motivating. There is more to learn than karate. My son has learned that you must make mistakes to learn. Perseverance is one of the key concepts they teach. The staff is excellent at developing leadership skills in students. The older students take interest in the younger students and mentor them. Every teen student you see there is respectful, and you will see them encouraging the younger students. The karate instruction is excellent (you can easily find info on their impressive credentials) and a great option for a kid that doesn’t want to play team sports. The staff is dedicated and caring. The instructor to student ratio in class is exceptional- kids get more instruction in class when they need it. Cost is reasonable. We drive 25 minutes to get there. We could go closer to home, but ASKC is worth it!
ASKC is a fantastic place! My kids have been going here for almost 15 years. The instructors meet the children where they are developmentally and don't have a one-size-fits-all program like some belt-mills do. My youngest has practically grown up at this dojo, starting when she was almost three. She's utilized the Afterschool program and the Summer program. There is always an emphasis on self-defense and fitness. Sparring, Weapons, and Grappling are all available as well as regular classes focusing on a cross-section of karate skills. If you or your children are looking for solid karate and life skills, this is the place.
A truly special place that dedicates themselves to teaching martial arts to people of all ages and providing a family atmosphere that promotes health, discipline, curiosity, and fun! My child is thrilled each week on Karate days and I am enjoying watching her learn!
My daughter has been going here since she was 3 and she’s now 7 and we have had nothing but positive experiences. She started out very shy and she is shaping into a very confident strong young lady. She also attends the After School and Summer Camps and absolutely loves it!
